The curly girl method, simply
What to skip, what to keep, and how to start without throwing out your whole bathroom shelf.

The curly girl method is a way of caring for curly hair that focuses on moisture, gentleness and letting your natural pattern form. You will hear people talk about it like a strict diet. It isn’t. Think of it as a set of good habits you can adopt one at a time. It was made popular by stylist Lorraine Massey in her 2001 book. It’s based on experience rather than clinical trials, so treat it as a starting point.
The core idea
Curly hair tends to feel drier than straight hair. One reason is that natural oils travel more slowly along a curl. So the method asks you to stop stripping moisture out and start putting it back in, then to handle your curls as little as possible while they set.
What people usually skip
- Strong cleansers that leave hair feeling squeaky. Many people switch to gentler shampoos or to cleansing conditioner, with a clarifying wash now and then. Many people switch to gentler shampoos or to cleansing conditioner.
- Some silicones and heavy oils that don’t dissolve in water. They can build up on some hair, especially if you skip shampoo, and may need a stronger wash to remove.
- Styling products high in quick-drying alcohols, such as alcohol denat. Some people find them drying, though the evidence is mixed.
- Fine-tooth combs and brushing dry curls, which break up the pattern.
- Rough towels. A cotton T-shirt or microfibre cloth is kinder.
What people usually keep, or add
- A generous conditioner, used to detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while hair is wet.
- A leave-in or cream for moisture, and a gel or mousse for hold.
- Applying products on soaking-wet hair. Many people find they spread more evenly and help curls clump.
- Letting curls dry without touching them, then gently scrunching out any crunch.
- Silk or satin at night. They’re smoother than cotton, and many people find their curls last longer.
The first weeks
Many people find their hair looks a little confused at first, especially if it’s been straightened for years. That’s normal. Hair can’t relearn a shape. But as old build-up washes out and new hair grows in, many people see their pattern more clearly. Be patient, keep notes, and trim damaged ends when you feel ready.
It’s a guideline, not a rulebook
Some people do every step. Some keep a favourite product that isn’t “approved” and their curls are thriving. Some clarify once a month to reset build-up. All of that is fine. The best routine is the one your hair responds to and that you can actually keep up on a busy Tuesday.
If you are starting over after heat or chemical damage, this method pairs beautifully with patience. It won’t repair damaged lengths, but it can help you care for the new growth. The Rebirth was made for exactly that moment.
