Moisture for coils: LOC and LCO, explained
Two popular ways to layer products on coily hair, and an easy way to try both.

Coily hair is beautiful, full of shape, and often on the dry side. Because the strand twists and turns so much, natural oils have a long way to travel. Layering products can help some people’s hair feel soft for longer.
The three layers
- Liquid: water, or a water-based leave-in. This is the moisture.
- Oil: a light or heavier oil. Many people find it helps their hair stay soft for longer.
- Cream: a butter or curl cream that softens and helps define.
LOC: liquid, oil, cream
You apply water or leave-in first, then oil, then finish with cream. Some people with thick or coarse hair say they prefer LOC. There is no research comparing the two, so treat this as a starting point.
LCO: liquid, cream, oil
Here the cream comes second and the oil goes last. Some people with finer coils find it feels lighter.
Small habits that help
- Work in sections. It helps spread product evenly through dense coils.
- Use less oil than you think, then add more if needed.
- Focus on the ends: they are the oldest, driest part of your hair.
- Many people like to cover their hair with silk at night. It is smoother than cotton, so there is less rubbing.
Wear it high
Moisturised coils look great in styles with room to move. On the days you want your crown up and out, wrap it loosely in silk, keeping it comfortable at the hairline, and let it reach for the sky.
